We’ve had ours for maybe three months, and like the earlier reviewer, I found that the plastic ring broke. I got to it before the baby and slipped the keys onto a metal key ring and may not let her have them… not sure. But I am reporting this product as unsafe to the CPSC. It is a pity. The idea of real metal keys on a baby key ring seemed perfect to distract my baby from my own key chain. But even that wasn’t enough… turns out she was after my rubber chicken key fob.

Although these keys are one of my 14 month old son’s favorite toys, one of the buttons came off and fell into the shell of the remote control. It was the larger button to turn on the light and he would have likey choked on it had it fallen into his mouth. If you purchase these, be sure to supervise your child playing with them at all times! However, I would suggest not purchasing them.

Please be careful and make sure you can see your baby when playing with these keys. The plastic ring holding the keys can break. We found the small broken piece in our baby’s mouth! We received this toy only three weeks ago.

*** IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT LEAD PAINT FROM CHINA-MADE TOYS: DON’T PURCHASE THIS ***

At first, this item seems to be a wonderful and safe choice for children who surreptitiously end up with your grime-coated keys and love to suck and chew on them. I know I enjoyed that tangy metallic sensation in my mouth and these keys tout that they are made of stainless steel. What they did not say on their packaging was that they are painted-over.

I received my package and opened it up eager to see if my daughter would enjoy her keys and after she seemed more interested in the huge fob that made funny sounds, she began to chew on the keys. I noticed one of the keys looked wrinkled and examined it to find that there were bubbles underneath paint that I could press in with my fingernails. I’m not the sharpest nail in the bunch, but I know that you can’t do that with metal that isn’t heated to its malleable state.

Concern about the lead in paint coming from China-made toys flooded into my mind and I took the keys away, much to my little girl’s dismay.

Growing Tree Toys was very understanding and helped me with a refund which was very appreciated.

If you can find a safe set without paint or can find a set of these that have not been painted over – try them instead.

I ended up buying some uncut car-key blanks (the ones with the rubber handles) and using them with a large key ring and one of our broken alarm fobs (after taking out the battery and cleaning it up). She’s happy as a clam with the ringing sound when she shakes them and she gets to chew on the keys and fob also. Make sure the keys you get are made from nickel as the brass keys are known to contain lead to make them more grind-able.

My 8 yr old received a set as a baby and his now 2 1/2 & 4 yr old siblings just broke the ring. We never had any trouble changing the battery (which I think I’ve only done 3 or 4 times) and I think 7 yrs is pretty good for breaking. I’m buy 2 more. One for us and one for a young cousin. Oh did I mention all 4 of my kids have LOVED these keys?
