The Importance of Color for Children

[ad_1]

Color not only affects our moods, it can also promote and creativity. If I ever doubted that children are attracted to color, I soon learned otherwise at a recent craft show in Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania. The children were drawn to the colorful hand painted rockers and tables and chairs that were on display. Many of them wanted to sit and play on the colorful chairs that were just their size. It has always been my belief that color is important when selecting items for children and the children themselves reinforced this idea.

Different colors promote different moods and mental creativity. Warm colors like red, orange and yellow all stimulate brain activity. Yellow is uplifting, like sunshine, and orange, which has a lot of yellow in it, promotes feelings of joy and vitality. Cool colors like green, blue and violet encourage relaxation, and surprisingly, pink is the color of tranquility. Green is also very soothing. It promotes harmony.

So what can a parent do to provide the mental stimulation that helps a young child learn and think creatively? Creative thinking leads to creative problem solving. Providing a colorful environment for your child can inspire creativity and learning. Colors are seductive. They stimulate the mind, help us relax and tempt us to think creatively. Choosing the colors for your child’s environment should not be gender based. Boys sometimes need the tranquility of pink and girls love the many soft shades of blue. Colorful bedrooms, colorful and colorful furniture can all be used to increase intelligence.

When selecting the colors for your young ones, think about what color attracts them the most. What color does your child select when coloring a picture? How do they behave when they’re in a warm sunny room, lazing on the soft green grass, or sitting quietly and reading in a blue bedroom? The better you know your child, the easier it will be to select the best colors for him. There are no right or wrong colors-just colors that work best for your child. So whether you are painting your child’s room, picking out his bedding or buying him a special chair to sit and think, don’t be afraid to select something very colorful. Choose colors that will stimulate his mind and comfort his body and soul.
