Education for us comes first so when we were choosing a educational game system, it definitely took some thought. We really couldn’t decide so we bought both with the thought that we would keep the one that works best for us. Here is our review on both systems.

Leapster TV- I bought this system off of Walmart.com on sale for 39.99 ( reg. price 49.99) with a free extra controller ( which normally costs 19.99!). The game that came with this system was Dora, but since my 3 1/2 year old daughter hates Dora, we bought letterpillar. I had read the reviews for this system and heard the complaints about the graphics but I figured since she never played/ or seen a games system since neither my husband or I are into games, that it wouldn’t matter to her. I was wrong…. the first thing she said when I turned it on was ‘there’s something wrong with the TV…. it looks funny!’ She did play the dora game and my complaint was there is not a menu where you can choose the game you want to play. It goes straight in to a dialog and then pinata whacking at letters. After whacking at the letters it takes you to the last game on the game card which is throwing a ball at a pin with another letter. That was it! No other games, nothing! If I am going to pay 24.99 per game, I would like to get my money worth. And it wasn’t just the Dora game that didn’t have a main menu, the letterpillar didn’t have one either and the graphics were the same…old and dated looking.

Now, I have had other leap frog products that I was very impressed with, but this system let me down. I was expecting so much more and my daughter didn’t seem so interested… but i heard the handheld version is so much better than the home version…

The pros: games seem educational

The cons: graphics, no opening menu, limited games per cartridge

V.Smile Plus ( the newer version with the microphone and stylus)- I bought this system from Toys R US for 49.99. The game that came with this system was Alphabet Park Adventure. This game has a menu at the beginning with multiple games to choose from: Alphabet Adventure, Alphabet learning, and sing along. The alphabet adventure has 6 games to choose from to help grandpa find the rings to make his carnival work again. Oh, and there is a way in the option section to allow my daughter to have continuous life and if she dies, it starts her off where she last was ( very nice option to avoid frustration!). In the learning part has 4 different games to choose from. They are trace the alphabet ( both upper and lower letters), early spelling ( a letter will be missing and you have to find it), matching ( find the upper and lower case letters and put them together), and colors and shapes. And the sing along has about 4 songs where she can karaoke to.

I am very impressed with the V.smile. Especially the attachments it has. You can buy attachments for a dance mat, computer keyboard, joystick with or without the stylus, and an art studio game. And my daughter seems to like playing this system a lot better than the other one. The first time she played, I had to coach her, but after the first hour, she can now do it by herself. And my princess loving daughter loves the fact that you can get this system in pink!

V. Smile Pros: better graphics, lots of games per cartridge, attachment choices, opening menu, choice in system color.

V. Smile Cons: although my daughter has learned from the games so far, I wish v.smile had some of the game choices that leapster has.

I love this product. I wish these toys were invited when I was a child. Vtech has taken a child’s favorite characters and made it educational for the child to learn. My daughters age 4 and 5 received this system 2yrs ago as a Christmas gift to help my one daughter(age 3 at the time) to learn her letters and numbers because she was having trouble retaining the information in preschool..After a few weeks with the Elmo game she was knowing the alphabets and all her numbers up to 10.

The system is very durable, my daughter who was 3 at the time stuck playdough in the opening where you put the games and I also caught her using the system as a stepping stool to reach some of her toys, but in all it still works.

Please do not be discourage by some people who have received systems that were mailed to them and was damage or not working this does not mean that vtech product is poorly made this could have been the part of delivery mishandling I ordered my 1st vtech system from walmart and it was just fine.

Again I love this toy if you can call it that considering your child is learning and having fun. I as a parent will choose this over any violent video games. Help your child to get a jump start on the fundamentals while having loads of fun!!!!!!!!!!!! I am buying my second Vtech and some accessories for the new as well. One on each floor. Playroom and bedrooms….That’s how much my daughters enjoy this system.

I was so excited to get this system for my 2 Daughters ages 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 for Christmas. I read some of the bad reviews on this, and thought that the malfunctions were just a fluke thing that wouldnt happen to me.

Boy was I wrong.

My girls played this system (WITHOUT abusing it) for all of an hour over the course of 2 days before it wouldnt power up again. It had been running off of batteries, but we opted to get the adaptor for it as well. It wouldnt power up again using either method of power.

So…here we are 2 days after Christmas, and the system has to be sent back to Amazon.

I am very dissapointed, and expected more from Vtech.

If the system were actually working, I would have to give it close to 4 stars though. The graphics arent the best, but then again, the games are for kids. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars for ease of use. My girls had the Leapster TV before this, and it was just too hard to navigate.

If you can get a system that isnt a fluke, its really not a bad deal for the money. The controller is really nice, but I do feel that the plastic see through cover that fits on the top of the unit that covers the games is too flimsy. The microphone is okay…the sound comes out of the TV speakers. Its not overly loud, but certainly loud enough.

Hope my replacement gets here soon!

I purchased the V tech smile game and machine about 4 years ago. After 2 years it just quit. It wouldn’t power on, it was just dead.

Recently I decided to purchase a second one as we have over 10 games. The machine worked for an hour and then it quit, again there was no power. In frustration I returned it to the store for a new one and the machine quit again after a few minutes of game play.

In all situations the systym would not turn on again after we changed games. I took a game cartridge and pushed it down to expose the hardware and I blew my breath on it several times. I inserted the game again, unpluged and repluged the cord and it worked again.

Sooooooooo what I realized was that my games were dusty and wouldn’t play in the machine. I quickly blew on all the games and then every one of them worked. I got out my 4 year old game systym, plugged it back in and put in a new game that I had blown the dust off and it worked. The entire problem of the machine acting like it was dead was because the game cartridges were dusty!!!!! We do have to unplug and plug in the game systym to get it working again.

I have read that many people have trouble with the machine just dying without warning. I think if you just blow the dust off the games, unplug and plug the cord back in, then your machine will work again.

Big relief to me as we really enjoy the learning aspects of this game.

I bought the Learning System for my daughter (now turning 4) last Christmas. Set-up is simple, and the joystick was easy for her to maneuver. She was so happy, and had fun trying new games with all her favorite characters. It quickly became THE FAVORITE.

I was pleased with the system until one day it wouldn’t turn off. I unplugged it and started it again, half of the screen was blank and the other half was pixelated. Again, it wouldn’t turn off. I tried some of my “old school Nintendo tricks” (blowing the cartridge, unconnecting and reconnecting the entire system), but the thing never ever worked again.

IT DIED AFTER 11 MONTHS

But, I really believe that this is a really wonderful toy when it is functioning properly. It was my baby girl’s favorite toy in the world!!! I’ve sadly watched over her sitting with that joystick in her lap and the cord dangling like a lifeless friend. Well, I couldn’t take it, so I’ve ordered the new model. Please, Vtech, don’t let us down again. Funny it craps out just as a new model is released?!

UPDATE: Just received the new model, the microphone is FANTASTIC! But stylus is hard to coordinate and enter button too small. WARNING: NO A/V ADAPTOR WAS INCLUDED
