Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe is a beautifully illustrated folktale from southern Africa. I have the hardcover edition and take pains to keep it in good condition. It tells the story of a villager who has two daughters he sends to the King who is choosing a wife. Although all agree both are beautiful, one daughter is nice and the other is not so nice. The sisters have an interesting journey and justice does prevail. The reading level is for ages 4 – 8, but you will have fun reading the story to younger children as well and marveling together over the pictures.
